tranny problems

I bought a 91 f-150, it has a 300 I6 with a 5 speed . The guy I bought it off of said it was stuck in gear. I got it out of gear and it will go back into gear now.The clutch pedal is on the floor, could it be the clutch ? With it sticking in gear ya think i need a rebuild. I found a tag on the tranny it has 3 rows of numbers and letters. 1.FITA 2. HC 3. H378927 thats the only info. I could find on it , they are on the drivers side of the tranny and I have no idea what they mean.

Tell us more about the clutch. Does the clutch operate normally? From your description it sounds like it is stuck on the floor which might tell us that the clutch cylinder or linkage is bad. If the clutch is inoperable, then yes the tranny can be stuck in gear and will be difficult to shift unless you know how.

I don't know this model, but my guess is that either the master or slave clutch cylinder is leaky or your mechanical clutch linkage is broken, usually just a cable. If you are really really lucky, the master just needs some fluid, maybe the previous owner didn't know much about cars?

The cylinders are easy to rebuild, some parts shops will have the rebuild kit, and they are relatively cheap. I do not know if the Ford slave cylinder is on the inside(bad) or outside(good) of the bell housing. If on the outside, you can rebuild that cylinder in an easy afternoon. The master should also be easy to do. Cables are usually not too bad as long as you can get at them. If it is on the inside of the bellhousing, you might need to pull the tranny to get at it.

Good Luck,

Jim Henderson

You have the M5OD. It's a hydraulic clutch with a concentric (inside the bellhousing) slave cylinder.

I would start with Jim's advice and make sure the master is full of fluid. If it's not, then fill it up and bleed the system out. There's a bleed screw where the line goes into the bellhousing. Bleed it just like you would brakes. Four or five pumps and then open the bleed screw.

If that doesn't fix it, you are probably looking at a new set of cylinders and probably a new line as well. The good news is that in order to get it that far apart, you can inspect the clutch while you're at it.

It also might be that the master cylinder pushrod has slipped off the shaft. It's somewhat of a common problem. Crawl under the dash and make sure everything looks like it's moving the way it's supposed to.

he drained all the fluids out of the tranny and master . I dont know anything about these models, i will try to check on it more tomorrow and let you guys know. I pulled the drain plug and did not look good, looked like sludge on the plug, not real sure what it was , might be easier for me to buy a rebuild tranny . I found one for $775 , does that seem like a fair price? I wont bother me to spend some money, I bought the truck for a $ 100.

Find out what you have, what works and not works before throwing money around as there are people who'll just take your money.
