hi im new to this whole forum thing and diesel all i know its a 7.3 idi turbo 94 its blows lots of blue smoke when start up after sittin for about 5 or more minutes and wont idle gotta keep the gas peddel at around 1000 rpms for a min or so and its jus misses horribly but u drive it come back she idles fine Im lost.. i heard injecter or injecter pump well thats expensive to hit and miss any one got any ideas?
Ok lets check something easy before doing this... Has the fuel return lines been changed? See if the return lines have paint on them (gray). If they do then we'll go from there.
Well Im no mechanic, and I did a swap...IP from my 86 to my 84, I screwed up by removing the IP gear as well [long story] but put both pumps in and both trucks are running. I suggest a Haynes repair manual for reference and as long as your good with your hands you should do ok...this is a great place to ask for help, I did not know this of this site when I replaced my IP, injectors etc...I wish I did. lol
Is it hard starting, or does it start right up and just run crappy for awhile? Are the return cups origingal like bigredtruckmi said? ound like you maybe have an issue where you may be getting air into the system when the engine is off.
The turbo trucks are a bit tricker than the non-tubo as you can't really remove the ip with all the lines attached, but still its not all that hard. Only tricky part is manurvering a wrench into tight areas to loosen the lines on the underside of the ip and the three bolts that hold the ip itself in. I did mine in probably 4-5 hours taking my time. It was also in my driveway in the snow, which didn't help.
well they still have gray on them i talked to the previous owner he said he had the injecters replaced 20,000 miles ago but there doesnt seem to be any real leaks on the return lines but yeah it will not start with out havin to hold the gas pedal at about 1000 rpms... then its runs really bad and clears up with in a minute or so with occ misses and blue smoke.. and i just bought the mechincs repair manual on it...and would that make it have no power because i couldent even get it over 65 pullin a 20 ft boat.....
I got to change mine soon on my 93 (im going to do that before i install the turbo thats getting shiped to me this comming up week.) i wanna change the injector pump before i install the turbo on the truck. i got mine with all of the lines atached and everything. the only thing i need to do it take the bolts out that hold it in place take my fuellines off of the injectors and then take the bolts out of the gear and pull it out.
Jimmy
ps my pump is weak i know that much cause i went 5flats so i could jsut get some black smoke out of my truck. comming up over the ridge the pyrometer will get up close to 12 and everynow and then ill back out of it a little.
Being the age of the truck and the return lines are painted gray. You are getting probably air in the fuel system from hairline cracks in the hoses between the injectors, fuel filter, etc. They are probably hard and cracked. But you don't see any fuel comming out of these. Correct... Air has smaller molecules than fuel does, So it will leak air into the system when you stop the engine. It probably takes about 10 minutes for the engine to run correctly after being shut off because of the amount of air leakage. Go to a autoparts store and get fuel line hose rated for diesel fuel. Yu can probably get it off a bulk roll. Get new clamps while your at it. I just don't trust old clamps for this. Hope this helps and good luck

muddingmcdude,
Welcome to FTE and the IDI diesel forum.
While doing the fuel return lines, get a return line O ring set from Ford and do the return tee's also. They will start leaking after you change the hoses anyway.
what about that whole no power thing not being able to pull a 4000 lbs boat more then 65??! lol? and would air int he lines cause it to blow tons of blue smoke
