I am perplexed and need a 88 302 efi auto genious. When i first turn the key i can hear the fuel pump priming and a clicking sound like something i never heard before, it just clicks once, under the hood, cant pinpoint where it is comming from, then the truck will start, is this normal ? I ask this question because untill recently she'd crank right up, now she cranks 6 times or so and then fire up.
The clicking may be the fuel pump relay. Or possibly it could be a noise from the fuel system if it's empty.
If the fuel system is draining down, that would explain why it takes longer to start. The system should hold pressure for a long time. If the system has a leak, then the fuel pump has to fill it back up before the injectors get any fuel.
The leak could be a dirty injector, a faulty fuel regulator, or a faulty check valve in the fuel pump. You can get someone to do a fuel system pressure check to see if this is your problem.
Yes, that sounds about right. What you want to do next is leave the gauge hooked up, and turn the truck off. The fuel pressure should stay pretty high. Ford has a spec on how long it should stay up, but I can't remember what it is. If when you turn the truck off, you can see the gauge slowly drop to zero, then you have a leak, and the system is draining down.
