I working on a 390 and a 428 for a couple of trucks. I think I've got the cams picked out and wanted to check and see what others think of the choices.
For the 390 a Comp Cams XE256H (set 4 degrees retarded)
For the 428 a Comp Cams XE262H (set 4 degrees retarded).
It all depends on your compression ratio. If you dont have enough compression for the cam you're looking at, it can turn the motor into a dog, big time! On the other side, if you've got too small a cam for the compression you're running, it can make the motor ping big time.
Whichever one you pick, for God sakes run some heavy oil like Rotella in it when you break it in. Too many cam wipes happening lately. Don't ask me how I know.
