Stupid Question...
Hey Guys--
I have a dumb question here...in 1971...the V-8 with the spark plugs that 2 slanted back and 2 slanted forward...360 or 390??? The reason that I ask is that I just found a 71 Ranger that has such a motor in it. The guy is letting me have the truck for $100. CAN YOU BELIEVE THAT??? The Tranny is bad and he wants it out of his yard...hahahahahaha ...in a couple of weeks, I am going to put some of the usable/salvageable parts up for sale on here. If anyone wants something specific...let me know. The engine is complete, and there is a lot of the trim still on it.

Both. That plug orientation was common to all FE series engines. In a 1971 truck, that means either a 360 or a 390. It's most likely a 360, as the 390 was a pretty rare option. If it's a 4x4, it's definitely a 360, as the 390 was only available in the 2wd models.
If the engine is original, you can tell by the VIN. If the 4th digit is a "Y", it is a 360. I think the 390 trucks had an "H" in the 4th position, but someone else can correct me if I'm wrong.
If the engine isn't original, or you're not sure whether it is or not, the only way to tell is to measure the stroke. 3.50" equals 360, and 3.78" equals 390.
