Timing off a lot...........

Each engine is different and it really depends on the mods and other factors. Generally, more advance is better until it starts to ping under load on a warm day.
As for it trying to die when you stop, I bet you have the stock 2v carb don't you? It tends to throw the fuel forward when you stop and starves the engine, has nothing to do with timming. I have one of those trucks and it does the same thing, a fuel bowl baffle or anti slosh sponge will help.
Also, don't trust the timming marks, they slip where the rubber part is on the balancer.
