Automatic to Manual Choke
I've been thinking of putting a manual choke setup in my '72 302 in place of the automatic choke which is starting to be unreliable. I understand the cable/**** part but what goes on at the carb? Does the cable just open and close the choke butterfly or does it also affect the idle speed? I had an old Dodge truck once and when the choke was pulled out the idle speed was also increased. Is the Ford setup like that.
If possible I would like to get the stock Ford choke setup and put it in the right location in the dash. Does anybody out there know where I can get the pieces/parts. Thanks

I believe the Ford manual chokes just opened and closed the butterflies, no idle speed adjustment. That's the way it was on my 69 with 360 and my 68 with 300I6 anyway. Might try the parts store for what you need. Ask to see a rebuilt carb the same as yours, only a year or two older...say 69-71, with manual choke. That should show you what you need to make it work. My 69 with 360 had a motorcraft two barrel. If that's the same one you have, you might ask to see a rebuild of that vintage. You can also find someone with similar carb and manual choke driving an older truck and look at theirs. That's what I'd do. Still wish I had the 69 and the 68, oh well.

I've had good luck with the manual chock kits offered in the "help" section inside most Autozones. They allow you to remove the original choke element from it's housing to install a supplied lever and cover. Sometimes the lever has to be bent to fit properly but none of that shows anyway. With this kit everything else stays the same- fast idle remains the same and is adjustable as always. If I remember correctly, the kits are under $20.
