I have an 87 T-bird column in my 52,it is a column shift with tilt, intermittant wipers. It also hascruise control buttons on the steering wheel.(I hope to make use of them shortly) You have to use a shift indicator on the dash.I also adapted the stock shift linkage from the donor.
It requires some cobbing but it really wasn't that difficult,I like using the most Ford parts that I can.I used one u-joint at the bottom of the column,(from the 88 T-bird) and anaftermarketone atthe 89 Mustang rack.Wiring was no big deal seeing as I had an 87-88 Cougar/T-bird wiring diagram book aquired from former employee years back. The fact is,just about anything the proper length can be adapted if you have the patience and knowledge
Bike, keep us updated on the jeep column please. I was at the pull a part this past weekend looking at vans and everything is trashed, plus there's the problem of the column shift, as I'll be using a 5 speed also. Is the wiring the same as GM?
When I installed my Cherokee column the wiring was easy. I used the EZ wire harness that was configured for the standard GM wiring. Everything plugged in with minimal effort. I wired the truck basically per the instructions and everything worked right the first time ('bout the ONLY thing that worked the first time), including the delay wipers, blinkers, start switch etc.. Other than hiding all the wires and switches, the column install was pretty straight forward.
When I got my column from the yard, it had no key. I went down to a local locksmith and bought a new tumbler set which included 2 new keys and installed that. It was cheaper than having 2 keys custom cut by a long shot. The only draw back to that is the door key and column key are different, ie I have a 2 key truck. But if you have shaved door handles etc, not an issue.
Cool! what's the column length? Should have grabbed the emergency brake pedal/release assembly out of the jeep as well.
Ax,
It looks like it's in the 32" range but I didn't measure it that close because I saw where Cowand had used one. I imagine that the wiring would be particular to Jeep? Check out Cowand's gallery. That's where I got my info but if I run into something I'll post it. I'll probably do my gallery, also.
Bike
Here's anolder GM column with apartial shaft cover. This is out of a 63 Riviera that I plan on using in my truck eventually. I will have to change back to a dash mounted ignition though.
I love the chrome!
OMG! your putting a non Ford steering column in your truck?
put a Ford in your Ford ( like the engines)
LOL
Mr. Stuart C do tell all your Fordtruck brethren and sister what motor and front end Chesser just finished putting in for you. Does GM and Chrysler ring a bell?
Bikewrench,
I used an 83 Ford Van column in my truck because it had the indicator with Overdrive on it. I had a friend shave and fill where the ignition switch used to sit. Best of success whatever you come up with.
just having fun with everyone since I caught so much grief for a non Ford engine.....on an earlier post...gee its odd that its ok to use other makes parts in these trucks but not the engine....
I have tried to keep both my roadster and pickup as FORD as I can,yes it's taken a little more searching and finagling, but I feel it was well worth it.
Putting a chevy engine in a ford is accepted practice by most people,it seems you get more grief from these folks when you use a FORD motor in your FORD!!! I had one guy tell me I would never be able to sell my truck or car because they didn't have Chevy motors in them!!?? It's just boring to go to a rod show and see 95% of the cars/trucks with Chevy engine in them, but that's just me.I don't have as big a problem with Mopar or one of the other 4 divisions of GM motors, you just don't see as many of them in anything.

Thanks Tacson. I know what you mean 52pickup. That's why I'm using an Explorer rear, Mustang Tranny, Areostar bellhousing, and a SHO engine. I wanted something different but stay Ford.

Its a funny thing, You can use Toyota steering boxes (or any other make anyting) but a chevy engine will get you roasted. I'm skating the line with my Caddy engine. I've used a variety of parts froma variety of makes and even some marine parts.
I don't have a problem with the Caddy,it,at least,is some thing different, the point is,how many different ways can you put in a chevy motor, they all look basically alike, the fuel injected Chevys were a novelty for awhile but most of those look lost in a ford truck anyway.I think the problem is that most people assume that this is a ford forum/board and that most of the people are partial to Fords.A lot of guys can't understand why some of us feel the way we do,me,it's just the way I am.I know I'm becoming a dinosaur, most of the rodder couldn't care less.I can't do anything about what other guys put in their trucks, after all,in the end,it is THEIR truck!!
Question for you posters:How do you feel you would be treated on a Chevy truck board if you had a Ford motor in your 51 Chevy pickup?
LOL....I like to laugh at the Chevy guys because one of the first things they do is stuff a 9" Ford differential under their projects.
To me...I don't care what people do with their projects. I do think though that there are alot of misguided people out there that think that the first step in the customization process is to install a small block chevy engine.....thats just no right.
bikewrench...I can't wait to see your truck when you finally get it all together, you are doing some nice work.
