Howdy! I just traded in my 2004 Diesel 4x4 Crewcab for a 2006 (same kind). Seems like it's a bit more refined. It's so quiet I'm hearing stuff I didn't hear before, which gets me to my question. I drove 3 Diesels, and all 3, including the one I bought, have an engine noise I describe as an empty paint can with the ball bearing rolling around inside. I first noticed it when letting the truck fall back to idle while driving slowly. Now I'm so tuned in to it that I can hear it practically all the time. It seems like it's coming from the right side of the engine. I searched the forums for like questions, but I haven't found the answer yet. Any ideas? Thanks for the help.
I believe that I hear the sound you describe when shutting my PSD down and then immediately open the hood, it's the turbo winding down. Sounds like the bearings are rolling around the base perimeter of a can (turbo housing). Is that what you're hearing?
I suspected the turbo also, although I'm not shutting the engine down, just allowing it to return to idle while driving slowly. I can hear it if I accelerate slowly, too. The frequency picks up until engine roar either drowns it out or the frequency increases to a point where the noise blends into the background. Since all three trucks I drove have the same noise, I figure it's normal. I'm curious, but not necessarily annoyed by it. Anyone else experience this sound?
It's a 2006 PSD, 4x4 Crewcab, only 300 miles on it so far.
