I have an 04' SCREW FX4 and noticed the windshield wipers arms sat at a wierd angle. I decided to try to adjust them. I thought there would just be a bolt to loosen. (That is how the older model fords worked) The new design has a clip that releases the entire wiper arm. There are teeth on the shaft that line up with teeth on the inside of the wiper arm. As soon as I removed the wiper arm, I heard something small fall down through the hole that surrounds the wiper....it was gone. Tried to get a magnet and search for it but no luck.
It appears that there is a keyway or something similiar that goes in a small groove on the shaft that lines up with a groove on the wiper arm. I guess this is to provide stability in addition to the many teeth that surround the shaft.
I have been to several autoparts stores and they have no clue what I'm talking about. I also called the dealership and they can't order one and had no idea what i was talking about either. Does anyone know where I can get one or if it is even important. Obviously the teeth grip the arm fine and doesn't slip but, I just didn't know whether or not over time the wiper arm would strip out.
I've had mine off many times, and have never seen, heard, or experienced anythinglike you're describing. I've never had a problem with any of my wiper arms...
that key that fell off was what aligned them at park position. You can move it to a different position to adjust the park position. Haven't looked at mine for a while now but you may be able to order another one at an auto parts store. Just bring in your other wiper arm - be careful of the key this time !
The key is not really needed and if removed from the drivers side will allow you to move the wiper arm for better windshield coverage. Removing it was the second mod I made to my truck.
