How far can you go on a tank of ethanol? Some students in France this weekend showed that the answer could be in the thousands of miles.
That is, of course, if you don't mind driving a car not much bigger than you are.
An ethanol-powered vehicle engineered by students from the Lycee La Joliverie took top honors at the Shell Eco-marathon, a contest to build a car that can drive as far as possible using the least amount of energy.
The vehicle averaged an astounding 2,885 kilometers per liter, or approximately 6,786 miles per gallon, according to an announcement released Sunday by race officials...
Interesting. And congratulations to those kids. But I wonder how far it would have travelled on gasoline.
The contest was for how far a vehicle could go using the least amount of energy. Therefore, since ethanol has less energy than gasoline, I would think a gasoline vehicle would have to go much farther to be equal to the ethanol.
I notice shell sponsered the eco marathon, so they could probably get their hands on any invention that might be a threat to the gas industry. if those one man vehicles can get that kind of mileage results, if you could even get half that on a small car. that would be great
Any inventions would be the property of the schools and students. Those vehicles don't resemble normal cars in any way and their results have no real practical application except to exercise the mind unless you want your next car built with bamboo and paper. Now there is an invention Shell should get a hold of and suppress!!!
