I have always replaced my own heater hoses but what are these spring fittings on my 7.3 PSD? I'm approaching 45K and want to prevent sudden evacuation of my coolant in the Middle Of Nowhere.
So far I've got:
the hotter thermostat with die cast housing,
coolant filter kit,
pass around (the belt) upper rad hose and bottom rad hose,
Motorcraft serpentine belt and tensioner,
heater hose vacuum turn-off valve kit,
flush and fill hose fitting
and "long life" PG type coolant,
but it appears the dealer will have to r&r those lousy heater hoses because of the way they seem to be connected to the heater core. What's up with that?
Have you guys tackled this repair or does it require a special FoMoCo (or Navistar) tool that I will only need to use every leap year or so?

No special tool necessary. Squeeze the locking tabs of the retainer together with some pliers and pull off the hose with a twisting motion. You can eliminate the connector and and re-attach some new hose with a clamp. The retainer on the tube can be removed by spreading the tabs apart and pulling it off.
What I did was take a drumel tool and cut the metal bands at the heater (Hose connections then slid the hoses off and install new with hose clamps. I got the hoses at Napa but think next time I will just get hose instead of the fancy molded ones. Alsodont forget the resovoire hose. Hope this helps.LPR
