Front End Questions

'69 F-250 2wd P/S

So I've replaced the rag joint, and now the power steering box. It is still a little loose and squirrelly on the road though. I've tightened the new box up as far as I want to go. It definitely needs an alignment as it has a slight problem (front wheels sit like this / \ - well not that extreme, but you get it). How much would having an alignment done help out? It drives good on a good gravel road with a slight crown, but get on a road that isn’t as good, and it doesn’t drive nearly as good. Thanks.

It sounds like you have saggy springs or bent Ibeams. A normal alignment shop will do you no good. All they can do is toe in and out.

You know.....being a '69 and having 245,000 miles anything is possible. Do you think that would make it drive a little better?

With the correct ride heigth by spring replacement if needed, beams bent to correct camber, radius and beam bushings in good condition as well all steering linkage, box tight, rag joint not oil soaked mush with correct toe in you should steer like new. At 240K miles is nothing, I ran factory springs over 843K miles without any steering or tire wear problems, just bushing replacements and a few King pins.

Well I know for a fact that the radius rod bushings are shot. They're all dry and cracked. By beam bushings you mean the ones on the ends of I-beam were they pivot right? I know this varies, but what should my approximate ride height be with 9.50-16.5 tires? Also, could the kingpins be wore bad enough to cause it to sit like it does? 843k miles!!!! How many motors/trannys did you go through in that time??? Thanks again guys!!!

If you don't have them, it might be a good time to think about a power disc brake, power steering upgrade. The easiest way that I know to get this is buying a donor and sliding a set under your truck.

You can get several things done at once. IMHO

That would be only two motors, factory 360 then a 390 which is still running and the truck was sold 4 years ago. The trans is hanging in there, a 435 that was rebuilt several times with a new shifter top added.
