can anyone tell me if there is any differances except the gear on 85 to 94 302?
is the oil pump shaft the same and is the dist same length?
I cant get mine to drop the last 1\8" in the block . the shafts seem to be the same but when it bottoms out i still am 1\8" from sitting flat in the hole.
thanks in advance. dave
there IS a differnece in oil pump drive shaft lengths. Distributors using the "Durasopark" system use a different length shaft than those using eec distrubitors. I can't recall what one is what... but I bet that would be your problem.
Either get a very long and thin flathead screwdriver, stick it into the oil pump shaft hole and turn the pump a little bit to get the rod to line up better with the pump and dizzy, or I've found it easier to just "spike" the engine by quickly turning the key to get the starter to move. It should seat right away.
You wont be able top turn the shaft with a Flat head screw driver, since the shaft is hexagonal and requires a 1/4" drive socket to turn it. Did you recently work on / replace your oil pump or oil pump drive shaft? There is a spring washer on the shaft to prevent the shaft from being pulled out when the distributor is removed. This spring washer end of the shaft is supposed to be pointing up toward the block. If it was facing down toward the pump it is conceivable that the spring washer may be preventing the shaft from going al the way down into the oil pump.
I stand partially corrected...thank you. You're right, you can't use a flat head screwdriver unless your oil pump shaft has been removed, which in my case it was. There was no spring clip to keep it in place. Thanks for keeping me honest.
When I put in the Billet MSD I had a problem getting the oil pump shaft into the Dist. It was a tight fit. We used a socket to keep turning the shaft a trying the dist. We found a spot where the shaft would drop on, then we kept rotating the shaft until we were at time.
