Key wont open lock.

I had a problem like this a few months ago and the solution was not intuitive. It was on the passanger side. The key would turn but it would not unlock the door. Turns out the outside door handle had rust on the rod that connects the button to the latch mechanism. This cause the button to not pop out all the way when the outside door handle is used. Is the button isn't out all the way the key will not operate the lock. Took me an hour to figure it out.
Once I figured it out I took out the outside door handle and grinded the rust of the button shaft.
