i'm not a horse race fan, but barbaro, the winner of the kentucky derby, broke his leg in 2 places. . life threatening to a horse.. jeeze i hate to see a hurt animal
Oh no ! I watched that horse win the derby and wow, what a horse ! Never lost a race. Just pulled out ahead of the pack and left them in the dust. A heck of a future was ahead for that horse. Too sad, all just too sad....
The last time this happened at the Preakness was in 1993 I believe. They had to euthanize that horse after the surgery. It had broken its ankle the same way Barbaro did. Surgery was unsuccessful so they put him down. Hopefully Vets are better now in some way to allow Barbaro to live.
When a human breaks a limb it is immobilized for usually 6 weeks sometimes more. With a horse this is not possible. A horse cannot stand or walk without using all four legs. A horse that cannot stand will die from complications of laying down too long. (internal complications....intestinal compaction, circulation issues etc.) In order to spare the horse from the ensuing agony of the complications it is euthanized. I believe that is why. If I am wrong someone please correct me.
Saw Riva Ridge break her leg at Belmont (or was it Aqueduct) racetrack in New York. Awful, awful sight...
They put her down right on the track.
There is new technology that allows them to put a support cast on a horses leg that can allow the horse to walk during the recovery period, plus the new "HCR" bone glue works wonders...
the issue is circulation... if they can't re-esablish blood flow no amount of casting helps.. and if they show that poor horse pulling up 1 more time on tv i'm throwing the one here in my office out into the street. the jockey did a hell of a job as stated above but it's like the replay of bonds hitting 714... it's inhumane
I watched some of the pre-race stuff while the ALMS race was at commercial, but didnt see the actual race.
I hope that horse makes a full recovery or at the very least is able to live a full life as a stud.
Its always sad to see anyone cut down in their prime.

Wasn't Riva. Riva was Secretariat's stable mate. He won the Derby and Belmont the year before Secretariat did.
Ruffian was put down after Belmont in '75, but not on the track. Go for Wand was put down on the track. I think that was at Belmont too, but around 1990, 15 or so years after Ruffian. Both of these were fillies.
kind of weird.. as much as i want to see that horse get better, and i do very much, you have people with signs for the horse to get better, and people calling troops in iraq baby killers.... i wonder if the world needs a horse to rally around, as synical as that sounds!
