Does anyone know if there is a 4 spd tranny that will fit my 240 six in my 67 stepside. I will be putting in a 302 in the near future so if there is one that will work with both that would be even better.
I have a RTS 4 speed OD tranny in my '72 302. They were common in mid '80s F-150s with L6. It is a light duty top loader with aluminum case. I just installed 3.70 gears which I think is the perfect combination for my truck and the way I drive.
These trannies are nice because they are cheap to buy (I paid $100 Cdn at the local pick-a-part) and cheap and easy to rebuild ($140 Cdn rebuild kit that I put in myself). They are also quite light...about 75 lbs. My truck, which is a long box F100 weighs 3825 lbs which is probably 300 lbs lighter than an FE/C6 combination so it handles nice and steers easy even with manual steering.
The way I drive is nice and easy, shifting at no more that 2500 rpm most of the time. This trannys shifts nice and smooth and the OD is nice on the highway. I can cruise a 70 mph at about 2300 rpm which is the sweet part of the torque curve for my engine.
