If you dont tow or haul heavy loads would you let 3.55 gearing stop you from buying one of these 06 F150's? I have a 3.73 FX4 and I really like the power I get from it. I'm afraid I'll notice the drop to the 3.55's. I wont be changing the tires/rims; keeping it with the stock 275/55/20's. I do mostly city driving but my highway driving is fairly hilly.
I test drove a 3.55 and a 3.73 back to back and I didn't notice any difference. I suppose pulling a heavy load I might notice the difference. In any case the truck I went with had the 3.73 gearing.
Try driving a 3.55 and a 3.73 truck and look at the tach at certain speeds (lower city driving, and higher highway speeds). Look at the difference in rpm vs. mph in each truck. If you are able to do this, make sure the trucks have the same size rims and tires.
I have a 2005 Scab 5.4L with 3.55 LS, and tow 3500 pound trailer, 4 passengers, bed full of gear, driving uphill to Flagstaff, AZ from Phoenix with ease.

If you are not hauling much or towing, it probably will not make a difference. If you ever do, you will want the 3.73s especially with the 20s. Just fyi, the Ford towing guide shows a reduction of 1000lbs towing capacity between 3.55 and 3.73.
The 5.4 matted to the 3:73 really seems to be the sweet spot. You will notice it on the HWY when those winds hit you. It also seems that the 5.4 matted to the 3:73 seems to do a little better with fuel consumption.
