f150 is getting grinding noise from what sounds and feels like my rear differential after truck is warmed up and then making a sharp 45 to 90 degree turn in 1st gear? Worse when towing my 15' boat.
Funny thing is, the issue is not present when truck is cold?
I'm trying to find out how to identify which differential I have on my 1993 F150 4X4 I6?
Is the tag on differential itself or somewhere on the vehicle?
This is my second posting to date, so please excuse me if someone has posted this same question recently.
I'm figuring I would try to change the rear diff gear oil first to see if this fixes the issue or not.
I would like to try new oil first before taking to my mechanic.
you can tell 2 ways if it has a limited slip. The tag should be under a bolt head on the diff cover....if you can read it (goodluck with that...they rust away easy)...it should say a gear ratio with a L in the middle...IE 3 L 55. or if you open it up, a limited slip rear end will have a clip in the shape of a S in the center with the diff cross pin going through it. this cross pin preloads the clutch plates in the limited slip....but if in doubt, just put it in....it wont hurt anything and its pretty cheap. hope this helps!!
