I am looking to upgrade my tow vehical and want your guys thoughts. Towing a 19' Fish and Ski, approximate weight is no more than 4,000 pounds loaded. Currently have a 03 Explorer 4.0l, tow package 3.73 etc... It am very pleased with the performance, it pulls like a champ (on flat ground)! My only problem is that I moved and now pull some large hills. I got a stellar deal lined up on a 03 F150, my concern is that it is a 4.6L with a 3.55 rear and no tow package. Hitch and tranny cooler will be added, but the specs on hp and torque on the 4.6 are not that much higher than my Explorer, realisticly how much better will this settup pull compared to the Exp? I know it is not the best settup, but man it is a sweat deal. Thanks,
My father in law tows a 25" Fleetwood TT@ 5800# empty
You cant get anywhere out here without pulling a fair grade.
He turns off OD and gets on quite well.
I have a 4.6 with 3.55. I tow about 4-5k a lot, with no trouble. It taks hills ok. But we have no mountains around here. I keep the trans serviced and use synthetic fluid. I used to have an Explorer with a 5.0. My Expedition with the 4.6 tows better. Just don't use the OD except on the turnpike.
Yep, the 4.6/3.55 combo will be just fine. The last truck we had, 97 F150 4.6 5spd 3.55 with 32" tires towed some loads with weights that would make most people want to hang me. The 4.6, despite its size is quite a little demon for pulling. For what you want to do, itll be just fine. Aside from the tranny cooler, spend the 45 bucks and get trans temp gauge as well. It cant hurt to keep an eye on the temps.
Ditto to what the other guys have said. I pulled a 6K TT with my 4.6L and while it did struggle on some big hills, for the most part it did just fine. You should have no problem.
