Slow starting issue

Need some advice. Last weekend I picked up a 73 F250 Camper Special, 390 auto. Great truck.

I notice especially once the truck has been driven awhile that once turned off the engine takes several seconds of cranking to restart. It never has failed to start but almost seems as though the starter isn't getting proper power from the battery or possibly a higher torque starter is needed. What do you guys recommend? Thanks

Common problem.
Problem worsens with having headers.

There is so much heat down there the powering of the starter in a fatiqued state has a direct influence on whether the starter can crank or not.

One thing people do to try an get rid of this problem ,is put a heat shield between the headers and starter.

Also, make sure the battery cables are clean and tight at the battery, the starter and ground locations. Use large battery cables - smaller cables won't carry the power needed for a hot start. If you find that it is the starter, the only fix is replacing it. Then use a heat shield to protect the new starter.
