Black Smoke

What would cause the engine to emit black smoke from the valve cover? There is no smoke from the tail pipes though. The engine is a 1971, 360 CID. Thanks.

It's not a bad question, just have never seen it before. Are you sure it's black smoke and not crankcase vapors?

Small amounts of black smoke is normal- it's when you start blowing PCV valves, breathers, and dipsticks that you need to be concerned.

Lloyd, I'm thinking you are burning oil that dripped onto the manifold. Black smoke it usually raw gas being burned.
