Over Heating When Backing With a Trailer
I just bought a 2001 Excursion V10 4x4. I was backing my trailer which weights 6080 pounds. I noticed after getting done that the engine seemed really hot. There was some smoke and a light smell. The smoke was coming from around the area of where you would put the oil in. The smoke was not heavy, but was actually light. There was a faint odor of what could have been oil or transmission fluid. Total backing time was about 15 - 20 minutes. Any suggestions on what this might have been. Could I possibly need a cooler for the tranny? Any and all suggestions welcomed.
Another trick to use when backing up is to put the truck in 4 Low. This will only work however if you have manual hubs, and you leave them unlocked. Your front hubs will not engage, but it becomes a lot less stressful on the transmission when in low range and you're moving at low speeds.
