Can i do this

I have a 1987 f150 with a 3 speed auto i was wondering could i get a tranny with overdrive of the same year so it would help on gas ????? can it be done

Yes, depends on how much money you want to spend to save money.

Best bet is to find out what came in your truck for that year. You are probably looking at an AOD.
