5 speed options?

I am currently running an E4OD behind a carb'd '90 302 in my '76F100. The E4OD worked well but maybe on its way out.( will diagnose later tonite)
I miss the granny gear I had in a previous truck as well as the fun of driving stick. I know I'll have to find a 73-79 donor for clutch pedals etc. but I was wondering what my options are for a 5speed. Is there one with a granny first and still have OD in fifth? If so what year trucks should I look for and what do I need to consider?;
Speedo must be cable,
what about flywheel? Is the '90 302 internally balanced?
I prefer mechanical clutch linkage is this possible?

Frank

Frank, sounds like you want a ZF. Wide ratio 5 speed, granny first, OD 5th, all synchro. Look for in 88-92 F250/350 with 4.9 or 5.8. Integral bellhousing, concentric hydraulic slave, so if you use this trans, your only choice is hydraulic clutch, but it can be done. Flywheel, and 82 up 302/5.0 flywheel will work.

I've been researching this swap in depth for my 79 - I already have the trans, pedals, and 11.5" flywheel and clutch, just need to get the master cylinder yet.

The big snag I see with the swap, is the need for a custom x-member for the 2wd trans, and a 2 piece driveshaft for the fixed yoke on the rear of the ZF. I'm not sure yet if any factory driveshaft will fit without modification.

I picked up my ZF for $500 at a local wreckers, they do pop up from time to time in the area.

If you have any more questions about it, you know where to find me.

Sounds like a donor truck is the way to go. Cross member should be easy, for the E4OD I cut down the '90 to fit my frame.
If my E4OD is shot like I suspect, I need to move on this quickly. How do I identify a ZF vs another 5 speed? I think an I6 is also an option along with the 5.0 and 5.8 right?

Drive shaft work is not that expensive I had mine shortened for $70 and that included new U joints. Do you need a two piece shaft? I guess you might, i forget how short standard transmissions are.
Like I had nothing else to do! I drove the Falcon today, kept tapping the intrument panel because the gas wasn't moving !

ZF has diagonal ribs. You can see a pic of mine in my misc. gallery. Also check www.car-part.com When I said 4.9 I mean I6, as far as I know the 5.0 V8 wasn't an option in the F250/F350 for these years. Donor vehicle would work quite well!

You need the 2 pc shaft so the slip joint can be in the shaft, not on the tranny output, since the ZF is fixed yoke.
