289 or 302???

Hey guys I am putting together a 68 mustang ( I know it is not a truck but I love this site so I thought I would give it a try) and I am not sure what way to go with the motor. I have a stock 289 and a stock 302. I also have a set of 351w heads and the valve sizes are the same as the 289 heads so I don't see how they would be helpfull. I just want a strong reliable 300 hp motor. I am building a resto mod so maintaining originality is not that important- your thoughts please- Mike B.

What is the stock 302 all about? Some, like the 78s, were junk, real bow-wows stock. Is it a '68 motor with higher compression?

I'd go with the 302, and basically upgrade the whole thing if I was doing what you are doing.

I'm another fan of the 302, althought 289 is a great motor. If your 351W heads are pre-1977 I'd use them, otherwise they're not really great heads. Be sure to check out the casting info links at the top of the forum page for identification if you're not sure what they are (same with the 302.)
