Newbie - (93 Explorer question)

Hello! This week I purchased a 1 owner 93 Explorer Sport for my daughter. It has the V6 & is an automatic. It had 58K original miles. I purchased from a dealer, but i called the original owner to see how it treated him. He actually kep all the receipts, which were in the glove box. He didn't have any major issues with the vehicle. The A/C wasn't working, so the dealer replaced the front & rear seals in the compressor. They also replaced the rear main seal and a few other small issues. My question is in regards to warranty. The dealer tried to sell me an extended warranty. 3 year/36K miles for $1300. It seems to cover most everything except emissions. More important, it covers the major items (Engine, transmission, A/C). I am wondering if I should go ahead and purchase. Should I expect to have enough repairs that would be covered under this warranty over the next couple years? Btw, I can do routine maintenance, but nothing major.

Comments?

Thanks and I look forward to learning more.

This truck has the A4LD transmission, which has issues, depending on the service it has seen they are known to require overhaul at about 125k km, which would be around 75k mls.. the warr will cover to 94k mls, and one visit to the tranny shop for a refit will be more than the $1300. Also note that the dealers make lots of money selling the Ext Warr, so bargain him down on it...

My 2 cents worth.

Make sure the warranty covers parts and labor. Also, make sure it covers suspension parts (particularly radius arm bushings) and the fuel pump. Both of those can be problematic (in addition to the trans already mentioned) on the 91-94s. One other thing to consider.... if the truck got totalled tomorrow, what would the insurance pay off on it. The purchase price and warranty costs may put it over the book value.

Just something to think about...

Thanks for the feedback. btw... I did try and bargain down. He said he was making $100 on the price. Not sure if I believed him, but he let me walk away, so I guess he was willing to pass on anything lower. I believe it does cover parts & labor. That's a very good question. I will ask today. In regards to the transmission. I owned a 94 XLT. 6cyl. Did I have the same transmission? I got 138K miles before I sold it. Doesn't mean I will be that lucky this time, but...

In regards to insurance payoff. Looks like they would pay about $3600 which would cover the cost of the car only. I can stop the warranty at any time and get some prorated amount of money back. At this point, the warranty would just be a good insurance policy.

Yes, the trans in the 91-94s are all the A4LDs.

Really? Guess I'm on borrowed time as my 94 is at 186,000 kms, and still smooth shifting.
