For sure some gauges should be in order. But, look into the hutch mods, also known as the pre-pump and in-tank mods. They get rid of all the places that air is being sucked into the fuel likes, and there are places where it's happening. Run a search on the topics and you should pull some good info.
do you need to do the 10 k mod if you are getting a Jody chip and if you do what does it help with the chip?
you dont need it and i dont know about jodys chip but with my hypermax chip it works great. a noticable power increase. i have an adjustable one because i can turn it back to stock most of the time but if i need extra power (and black smoke for the ricers) i can turn it up. it fools the computer into thinking oil pressure to the injectors is low so it raises it to make the injectors fire harder= more fuel. i dont see why it wouldnt work with a jody chip but maybe someone has a definate answer for you. it is a from slp diesel performance but i think black cloud has the same one only i think they call it a 18k power module. here is a link or you can do it yourself with a resistor from radio shack but i think some had a rough idle by doing it that way. i recommend it and i did notice about 1-2 mpg increase unless that was due to something else but it diddnt hurt milage and increased power http://www.puredieselpower.com/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=30_32_40&products_id=80
