Starter Relay

STill getting there...On the solonoid, there are two big lugs, 1 on each side. I know the battery is connected to one side and the starter cable is connected to the other side. On the front, there are two smaller posts marked S and I. Is the S wired to the start post on the ignition switch and the I wired to the ignition module or coil?
Thanks,
James

Yes.
But the S is wired through a safety switch also.

a neutral safety switch? The S goes to a neutral safety and then the ignition start post?

It will go one of two ways, the switch is before the ignition switch or it will be after it.

Shouldn't matter if your wire harness is still there - there will be a wire at the solenoid with a connector for it.

If it doesn't work, THEN look around the tranny tailshaft housing and check for a pair of wires to a switch. Some people bypass the neutral safety by hotwiring the two together, but that isn't recommended.

The neutral safety goes after the ignition switch. It breaks the wire that goes to the "s" terminal.

To get a better handle on how the relay works, if you take a small jumper and jump the large terminal were the battery + goes, to the "s" terminal, the engine should turn over. Make sure it's out of gear or it may run over you.

I think I've got the picture now. Currently There is no neutral safety switch. This project ended up with everything stripped out,(all wiring, front suspension, all interior and dash stuff), it is now the panel body on the frame with a 9" rearend now installed. There are no harnesses left for any of the wiring. After 50 yrs. there were countless splice jobs and jury- rigged connections, so I figured I might as well start from scratch. It's been a real learning experience...in a good way! This site is great! Usually there are enough responses to compare advice and comments to verify. Sorry for the story, figured I'd let you all know where I'm starting (no pun intended) at.
Again, thanks to all,
James

charging system

I am working on a '56 Panel truck (the smaller 1/2 ton one). It will have IFS, 9" rearend with 2.75 gears for now, C6 tranny, and a 460 engine, ford of course. It is .030 over with street cam and aluminum Cobra Jet heads, hopefully good for 450-500 hp. It has a long way to go. As described earlier, it is stripped to a shell on the frame, no interior, etc.
