71 arm rests

I cant seam to be able to remove these, can't get a 1/4 drive socket to work. are they armrests held on by screwheads, or boltheads?
I have a new set to replace on my truck.

If they haven't been removed and replaced with odd screws they are a bolt head, no slot for a screwdriver of any kind. That's the way they were on my 69 anyway, and I think yours is the same. I had to use a socket, can't remember the size, and a socket extension. Afterwards, I had to use a needle nosed pliers to get the socket out of the armrest screw holes. Just take your time. Of course if you're going to trash the old ones you could rip the upholstery off down to the metal frame, exposing the boltheads on the screws for easier removal.

I think I used a 3/8 deep 1/4 in drive socket to remove mine. If you use a deep socket, it isn't too hard to get it out of the access hole.

Like they all said there bolt heads. But i would suggest replacing them with screwheads.. its just a lot easier to get in there.

My Dad and I have owned several '67-'72's and we've always used a 3/8" nut driver to take the arm rests off. Get a good one (not a cheap import) and it will usually have a little smaller outside diameter than a 3/8" socket so it will fit inside the holes in the armrests a little easier than a socket. You also won't have to worry about the socket getting pulling off the ratchet and getting stuck (been there, done that). Next best option is a 3/8" deep well 1/4" drive socket, but I prefer the nut driver. One tip, once you get the screws out take a dremel tool with a cutoff wheel or a hacksaw and cut a slot in the head of the screw. That way if you get in a bind you can use a regular screwdriver to take the armrests off or put them on in the future.
