I have a '72 F 250 explorer heavey duty with power steering. What year power steering boxes are interchangable with it?
Also, how rare is my explorer?
thanks
dj
I've considered power steering for my 72 F100 but found that it takes a special gearbox. 1973 and up have adjustable steering columns. The 72 takes a gearbox that is shorter in the direction where the column bolts on. Bendix made one that works. Otherwise, you have to get a power steering column which is shorter. I saw those at the Supernats last spring. There was a pretty good price tag on them. I wonder if you could take the whole set up from a 73+ and try it????
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 23-Apr-02 AT 08:38 PM (EST)]In '72 power steering was an option. The main difference is the steering shaft. You would need to get one from a truck that originally came with p/s. You could change out the whole column but all you really need is the shaft because of the length. I changed mine about 15 years ago and I seem to remember that it was a direct bolt on. There was also a problem with the plate that holds the end of the column inside the engine compartment. I really don't remember what that was but I had to use the one made for p/s. I JUST RE-READ ORIGINAL POST AND REALIZED IT WAS CONCERNING AN F250!! DISREGARD THIS POST. SORRY!
Thank you for all of the help, You also made me realize that I forgot to mention that I am replacing the worn out factory box with a used one (if I can find a good one) So I already have the colum. Thank you for your help.
