'73 vs. '71

I've got a 71 F-100 and I'm considering "trading up" to a 71 F-100. The 71 has a V-8 and p/s, p/b & a/t.

I took a look at one today, but forgot to notice if the 71 has disc brakes up front. Do they? If not can you convert them?

I was surprised how different they are inside and out, are the front suspensions the same? Do they pretty much swap out?

I'd like to keep my lumber rack from my 71 which is a long bed. THe 71 I'm looking is too. It looks like the lumber rack will fit, can any verify?

Thanks

Sorry, there was no disc brake option for the '67-'72 F100. You can certainly swap for discs or the whole front suspension from a '73 and up F100/150 though.

Actually, there was a disc brake option on the 67-72, but I think it was limited to the Camper Specials and Trailer Specials. In any case, he's right. The only think different about the front suspension is the spindles. You can swap a set of 73-79 spindles with disc brake rotors and calipers onto a 71 with no problem (you'll also need the master cylinder and proportioning valve from the donor). Some guys prefer to swap the whole front suspension as a unit (I-beams, radius arms, etc.) so you don't have to deal with changing king pins or realigning the truck when you're done. All in all, converting a 67-72 to front disc brakes is pretty easy as long as you have a 73-79 donor available.

I could be wrong, but I think that your rack will fit just fine. Everything I've heard is that the 67-72 and 73-79 beds are dimensionally identical. The only differences are cosmetic. Take a tape measure with you and verify the measurements the next time you go look at the 71. Better yet, post here whether or not they are the same. I'm sure there are others who would like the answer, too!

Well, lets just say there were no disc brake options for the ‘67-’72 F100 with 5 lug wheels. Discs were only an option on the 8-luggers. ’67 was the only year you could get a F100 Camper Special (in the ‘67-’72 realm) but I don’t know if the front had 8-lugs. Stockman, where are you???

My 73 does not have power brakes, and this 71 does. Would I still be able to swap master cylinders?

(I actually checked the parts page, a reman m/c is $27 so I guess it wouldn't really be an issue.)

And thanks for the great help so far!

Just so I get this right -- you are going from a 73 with manual disc brakes to a 71 with power drums. You want power discs. I am assuming that you will be able to steal parts from the '73. You should swap the entire front end (spindles, radius arms, I beams, etc.) over as a unit. Keep the power booster on the '71, but ditch the master cylinder. Get a master cylinder for a 73-79 F-series with power brakes. Also move the proportioning valve from the 73 to the 71. Put new flex lines on both front brakes while you're at it. Fill it up, bleed 'em, and go for it!

Did I miss anything?

I had a 76 and was not pleased with what they did in 73 because of the oil crunch. Ford took metal out of everything to make the truck lighter. Just compare the door hinges on the 71 with those of the 73. If they are the same as my 76 they are weak cheesy units. My doors rattled a lot. My 70 is solid.

Also The 73 is the first year to have dash vents for air conditioning. This means that if it is like my 76 there is a big A/C and fan box in the engine compartment. That makes it really hard to get to the spark plugs or swap a 460 in.

Yeah Russ those door hinges are forged, along with the radius arms. Sheetmetal is thicker too, can’t say that about the “newer” ones.
