That is the major quench area of the heads, KB says they tried have 2 & 3 quench area. They said, with the extra area they had no to very little advantage over the single quench area. This way more material is removed to have less material above the first ring.

These are the most bizarre looking pistons I've ever seen! Why the funny looking pattern in the piston top? It almost looks like it was designed with a dremel tool. Don't get me wrong, I'm not an expert by any means, and do not mean to sound like a jerk, but I've just never seen anything quite like it.
