i have a 97 f250LD 4x4. Tranny started leaking a few months ago, been keeping a close eye on it though. 1 day I want off-roading. I wasn't mashing through mud or anything like that, didn't even engage 4x4, mainly just a few small water holes, not deep enough to do anything. After roughly 5 minutes of playing I left and started down the road again, but I tranny wouldn't shift into drive/Od. I have both low gears but no drive at all. I tried manual shifting but It didn't work. When in second gear, you can feel it trying, or wanting, to shift but never makes it. When at high rpm's in 2nd and you let foot off the gas, seems like it enters neutral, until rpm's get high enough to engage again. Any ideas as to what might have gone wrong, and what to do to fix it. Thanks in advance for all the help.
A bad Transmission Range Sensor can cause that but so can internal transmission problems.
The TRS is easy to replace. It's on the side of the transmission where the shift lever goes in.
OK after some research on the transmission range sensor (TRS), I was told it was also called the manuel lever position sensor (MLPS) I decided that I would replace it and give it a shot. After replacing it truck did same thing, no high end gears. Reckon it's an internal problem? How easy would it be to fix, or should I just replace the tranny?
The best thing would probably be to take it to your dealer and have it diagnosed properly.
If it's an internal problem it's probably not something you'd want to tackle depending on your mechanical experience and skills.
If you get it diagnosed and it's internal it may be best to just replace it. Again though a proper diagnosis would be best.
