So I go to the junk yard to get an oil cooler to work on 7.3 so I can put it in the truck.
Well due to the fact I couldn't get the bolts out of the one in the junkyard I only got the cooler itself and the end that has the oil filter on it. I figure no problem I'll just use the front piece off of mine
WRONG!!! Apparently they made at least 2 differant ways to hold the O rings in. Mine has 4 big black orings on it. The heat exchanger has two rings welded to it that hold the end one in place.
The one that came out of the junk yard has two smaller o-rings and one black one on each end. So I guess it's off to the junk yard tomorrow to see if I can get the other piece off somehow.
I swear they do this on purpose just to make life miserable.
By your description the oil cooler you acquired is of a 6.9 early years, they had 6 Orings. You need the 7.3 cooler which has only 4 orings......... how to check if its a 7.3 three ways, !/2" head bolts, the serial number or by the tag on the timing gear/oil filler cover with the year of manufacture. Make sure you get an F series for trucks and an Eseries for van they are two differently designed coolers/headers. Eseries filter points back and Fseries points forward.
