ok hope there is someone who can give me some help. friday was pulling over a couple of trees with my 99 7.3 auto and had some constant pressure on the transmission for about 7 or 8 minutes. when all of a sudden the transmission started pukeing out frome the fly wheel cover bad! not a small leak! thought the front seal went out. so took it all apart saterday and front seal looks fine. tourk converter looked fine, i couldnt tell where it all came from( about 2 gal came out.) Has this happed to anyone? what happenned? the transmission was very hot after this happened but the fluid didnt smeel burned. i have a new seal to put in but dont want to put it in unless i know what went wrong.
With no air flow over the trans cooler you've over heated the transmission. You should replace the seal at a minimum. Chances are you will have more problems down the road.
We see lots of that here and sell lots of transmissions and converters to guys that snow plow for the same reason. The problem is that the torque convertor is very inefficient, especially if you are running a chip. When pulling tree stumps or pushing snow you T/C never gets a chance to go into lock up, the fluid coupling never gets caught up and sheers the oil causing it to heat up and boils. You should service the trans even if the oil does not smell burnt.
If you plan on doing more stump pulling consider putting in a lower BD Low Stall Convertor that will control heat, transfer more power and improve fuel economy. We also offer a secondary trans cooler with fan which cools great especially when there is no air flow to the factory cooler if you do not want to pull the trans to swap convertors the cooler with fan works great and is an easy install.
Deep sump oil pans work good too...
Hope this helps

Look closley at the neck of the T/C where the seal rides if it is groved the new seal may not hold also inspect it for crack's have seen them crack under heavy load. Like Dave says service it as well just because it doesent smell burnt is no indication that the additives have not been depleted cause of the heat. Also a coupel bottels of lube guard-red would not hurt a bit
