Well today it finally happened, the beast did not start and I ran the batteries down trying. I don't know what is wrong with it. It smokes white when I am starting it and I do have blowby. My head gasket is blown (i think), it starts like crap and has barely any power. Suggestions?
1990 7.3l IDI NA e4od Smokes just a little bit of thick white smoke while I am cranking over on it. I think the head gasket is blown because it leaks oil and I have replaced the valve cover gaskets and did the oil pan gasket twice just to make sure and I always had the same amount of oil leaking so that is why I think it must be the head gasket since they seem to go all the time.
Does the smoke smell like fuel? I bet you have a few bad glowplugs , eazy test, take a 12v test light, clip one lead to the positave post and tuch the top the each plug with the other end, remove the wire from the glow plug first. if it lights the plug is good, no light bad plug, replace only with motorcraft DZ9.
can you pinpont were the oil is leaking from? top or bottom back or frount? it might be best to degrease the entire engine and then run it for a bit and see if you can spot the sorce
I've tested all the glow plugs and the relay and they are all working fine. I am not sure where the leak is, more like above the starter. The wind bathes everything in oil, hence my truck has minimal rust.
Could be two things that I can think of right now.
How long since the CDR was serviced?
It should be soaked and then rinsed out with gasoline every other oil change.
It will get gunked up inside and not close under high vacuum which causes oil to get sucked into the intake. Do you see oil laying down in the intake manifold?
Or you could have an injector that is leaking fuel or not spraying properly which will cause white smoke from unburnt fuel.
Since you are having oil consumption, it is probably the CDR.
Blown head gasket does not sound right because there is no oil pressure passages that go through the head gasket. Just drains back to the oil pan.
With the engine idling if you had a blown head gasket you should be able to see a compression leak from under the truck. Also a blown head gasket will usually involve the coolant passages in some way.

The CDR is the tin pot behind the intake, use caution when removing as the tubes are very brittle after a long time. If the CDR is grey I would consider replacing it. If you see any black chunks in the intake or on the screen then it has disintegrated internally.
Ford calls this item a "Adapter assembly for Crankcase Ventilation" Part number E3TZ-6A665-A The part # for the rubber tube on the CDR... Retainer # E8TZ 6A892A
IH part #1805319C1 CDR
Check the Oil pressure sender on the back of the block, they are known to leak.
Well the oil is everywhere from the front of the engine running all the way to the end of the transmission. I am sure a lot of it is run off oil, I am just saying it isn't just rear of the engine or something, it is most heavily noted around the exhaust manifolds towards the rear of the engine.
