93 Exp XLT idles poor

I have a 93 Exploader XLT with the 4.0.

When it is cold it does not want to stay running, it idles around 550RPM but abbruptly dies. When warm it idles around 600, but very rough. This started 2 weeks after a headgasket replacement. I'm thinking my EGR valve is bad, any ideas?

low compression could cause bad idling. Run a compression test and make sure the cylinders are the same all the way around. EGR is a likely possibility, you could test that by disconnecting the egr vacuum line and plugging it. Did you check for vacuum leaks? Does it run fine except for when it idles?

runs great except at idle, vaccum connections check okay.

It idled fine before the gasket work, I developed a small leak in the lower intake gasket and decided to pull the heads while I was down there. Everything inspected ok.

Any tell tale signs of poor compression without bringing it into a shop?

Sorry if I seem noobish (That would be because I am), but IAC is JAA (Just another acronym). Can you elaborate?

IAC = Idle Air Control valve. Controls the idle speed by allowing air to bypass the throttle plate when it's closed.
It's a small metallic cylinder on the driver's side of the throttle body with a few wires coming out of it. At least it is on my '94 4.0L Ranger.

Remove and clean, it gets dirtied up over time. Usually cleaning it fixes it.

Rangerpilot is probably correct,
if you disconnect the electrical contact from the IAC it should drop the idle to the 600+, if it does not change the idle the IAC is either bunged up with carbon or dead, a vacuum leak would give you a high idle so we may as well discount that...

The IAC is likely the problem. But if cleaning doesn't help, check the codes. My 94 throttle position sensor (TPS) just went bad and the idle was erratic. (But driving was too). Running the diagnostic pinpointed the problem real fast. Check the posts at the top of this forum for help if you've never done it.
