Puzzled

I have a 1988 F250 7.3 automatic 2wd with a 3.55 reat axel. The door pillar says that the gross vechicle weight is 8800lbs and my truck weighs about 6200 lbs empty. Does this mean I can only legally tow 2400lbs!! as the gross weight is the truck and trailer weight combined.
many thanks for your input.

i think gross combined weight is for trailer towing. try looking in a towing or owners manual. also post this in the trailer towing forum, they should be of help there.

dorsetmerv, the 8800 pounds is Fords recomendation for the max weight of the truck and load as it left the factory. 8800-6200=2600 pounds of cargo, fuel and people.

In 88 the GCWR (Gross Combined Weight Rating) which is also a Ford recomendation was 18 or 20 thousand pounds for the truck, trailer, cargo and people.

In the real world of towing, the states could care less what is on the door post label.
What they care about is what is on your registration for gross weight if you are towing for business. I have mine registered for 20,000 pounds, which I exceed a little to often.

If you are towing a recreational type vehicle that you own, it don't really matter what you pull as near as I can tell.
