I've just bought this '05 F-150 flareside, and I'm having nothing but problems finding parts, such as frame mounted hitches with 2" receivers that will just bolt-on. A sliding/aluminum bed cover won't fit because the bed is tapered and bowed. I want to put a lumber rack on and remove the plastic bed rail covers, but I see the top of the rail has some funny contours. I haven't pulled the plastic off yet, but I don't see any pockets for racks of any kind. I seemed to have picked the only model that has the smallest audience for after market parts.
Also, where does the steel end and the plastic start on the truck bed? That's the other thing I noticed, is the amount of plastic. I'm driving a "Tupperware Truck". I'm starting to feel old. First new truck since 1986. My other ride is a '68 Bronco (steel and iron).
Is there a forum on here for "Flareside owners"?
Help!

Reason: Clarification
Just be glad you didn't get a Toyota! A friend of mine just bought a Tacoma Double cab. The ENTIRE bed is plastic! It is only single wall and it is a plactic tub. I sure hope it never cracks!
It's very hard to find parts for the flaresides/stepsides for basically all of the trucks, both from Ford and other manufactureres. They are the minority and treated that way in the aftermarket category.
I'm sure the hitch can be purchased from Ford. As for the other issues, try doing a search for what your looking for...i.e plastic bedrail covers FX, or FX stake pockets..
The other members that have FX's will chime in...

The Flareside does produce some challenges for aftermarket manufacturers. Here, at ShurCo, we do have a soft rollup cover that will work with your pick-up. If you would like to get a good view of how it mounts and what the metal looks like under those caps you can go to our website- truxedo.com. Click on Lo Profile and then installation. When that page comes up, scroll down to special instructions and you will find one for your application. It has a good diagram that shows how the caps fit on your truck in relation to the metal.
FX4 is a trim level like the Lariat. It only comes in 4 wheel drive and can be a flareside or style side. The Lariat is the luxury version and the FX4 is the off road version. Hope that helps.
I just bought an 06 STX Flareside. The dealer put a U-haul hitch on for me. It took about 20 minutes to install and is 2". Looks good too. I bought a LeBra soft tonneau for it from Pep Boys. I had to look it up online and give them the part number. It is a flip-lock cover just like the one I had on my Colorado. It is the best soft cover. That's all i can help with for now. Good luck.
