Lightbulb Lisense Plate Light

Hello,

Am in the process of preparing my 1966 F-100 for a very long journey. I need to have my lisense plate lit up at night to avoid getting tickets. I have a flareside bed, and normally the lisense plate is bolted underneath the drivers side taillight which has a light that shines downwards and lites up the plate. However, this setup does not apply fto me, as I have a homemade bumper on it that sticks out away from the bed. Whoever made this bumpe did a very good job, and the bumper even has a little place for a light to go. Getting a light and installing it on the bumper is not a problem, my problem is where to wire the light into. What wire should I splice into to light up the lisense plate? I thought about splicing into the taillight, but then the lisense plate light would flash every time I put the turn signal on and would get brighter when I put the brakes on. Really need to get this taken care of, don't need or want a ticket.

Thanks,

You want to tie it into the running lights the ones that come on when you turn on the headlights. There should be two wires to each of your tail lights one for turn and brake lights and the other for running lights. Use your voltage tester or buy a cheap tester with a light and percing probe to figure out what wire it is. Another way would be to tap into the trailer plug if it has one. If you hook it up and it blinks change to the other wire.

Have simular setup on my 65 but w/ a barton bumper. Purchased an aftermarket light and tied into taillight circuit in the harness. On the 65, believe it's the green wire. You can determining which wire if you have a circuit tester. I have one of those cheap type where you connect one end to ground using an alligator clip and the other has pointed end for probing that lights up when correct wire is found. Not sure if light is grounded when mounted to bumper, or if 2 wire light just connect second wire to a good gound.

Thanks for the help on which wire to splice into! Sounds like an easy project. Happy Wrenching.

FER, There are 3 wires that come to the back of the truck. Two are for the brake/turn signals and the other tail and as refered to running light. There should be a wire leaving the harness already for the license plate light. If you can find it, you can put in a butt connector and with heat shrink, make it weather resestant.

i got pulled over for this once. i had the plate mounted below the tail light so it could be lit up. But i also have a home made bumper that sticks out past the bed. only the top half of the plate was visible. the police officer told me that because it was a '66 it didn't have to be lit, but it did have to be visible.
