Triton V8

What makes the designation Triton different from any other 4.6 or 5.4L engine?

I believe the triton are the 5.4 and 6.8 truck series motors. (do they call the 4.6 a triton in the truck??) ANyway, they are the same engines, no difference at all, just a name.

Yes, the 4.6 is also a Triton. It says so on the throttle body cover on my '97 4.6L

The name Triton came along with the first application of the Ford Modular V-8 engine. Just a marketing name as mentioned by others in this thread. Nothing new here. Manufacturers have been naming their engines for many years.

I have some knowledge of the AMC V-8 engines used from the mid sixties to the late seventies. These were called Typhon V-8s. I don't recall what Ford was calling the small block and big block V-8s in this era.

its not just a name!

Triton is not just another name... if you are overheating triton engines will cut out the four hottest cylinders and rotate through the coolest...it does this so that you are able to hobble to the nearest place you can stop...
