Hello all i am new to these forms and new to vechials. I wanna rebuilt my 360 in my truck right now and wanted to know if it is possible make it a 4x4. It has an econline heavy duty rear end in it but the body isn't in that good of shape. so i was thinking about buying another 73 and changing parts out. I want your guys oppinion on this on how econimal it will be. What transmission would fit a 360 or should i get a new engine, or would it be alright to bore it out to a 390? Thanks for your help in advance if i could get your opinions and thoughts.
What deisele75 said would be alot easier, and you could get a 76-79 4x4 with front disc brakes and engine choices are 351M/400 or 300 I6.
Just to say the only diff. between the 360 and 390 are the crank and pistons, just like the 351M/400s.
What about a 460? i can purchase one for about 100 would that fit? and if so what transmission would that line up with. would it not line up with the one i have now?i don't think it will but i am no expert on this.
460 fits same transmission as 351M 400 but not 360 390. If you get a truck with 4 speed you can swap engine as long as you have bellhousing and flywheel for the engine you want to use. You can swap engine stands to put 360 or 390 in 77 to 79 4X4. 300 six stands moved to rear set of holes in frame support 360 or 390. I swapped a 390 in place of my 351M in my 79 F-350. I would buy a 4X4 if you want 4X4. Body parts swap but frames are way different in 79 and older trucks.
Like JamesAtXtra said, a 460 would bolt up to a C6 transmission with the same bell housing pattern as a 351M/400, but you'll need 460 motor mounts, and may be a bigger radiator, but the 460 is a better power plant than any of the previously mentioned motor(300-400).
