....As I browsed the 'sticky' regarding white smoke, etc. I saw many were having problems with the cold start/ROMP ROMP problem. I endured this for three years, until last year, I went from the regular Rotella15w/40 to the Rotella Synthetic 5w/40. NEVER ANOTHER ROMP ROMP!! Problem solved--wasn't glow plugs, etc.....just needed thinner oil. Guarrantee it will work.....come winter time
Yeah...HEUI injectors can be finiky about their oil and fuel. Lighter weight oil definitely helps when things get cold. Clean oil makes a big difference too.
I believe the reason for this is that in cold weather, the 15w-40 oil is thick and slow-flowing, and so the flow of this low pressure oil to the HPOP is a bit delayed when you first start it up. This causes the ROMP ROMP ROMP idling until you "give it some gas" via the accelerator, or it just smoothes on its own. With the 5w-40 synthetic, it thickens less and flows better so the HPOP gets a better supply of oil on ititial startup. This is what I've gathered from reading as to what causes those loud pausing ROMPS, and it seems like a good hypothesis to me.
