Smog pump problems

I have searched the forum and found a lot of great info but I am still not real sure what to do. I have a 1986 F-150 302 with EFI, and a automatic trans with 115000 miles. I have having problems with the Smog pump belt flipping backwards and I just found a dent in the pulley on the alternator which is causing all of the problems. I don't know if I should get a new pulley, a new alternator or just remove the smog pump. I live in middle Georgia and the truck is registered in Tennessee</ST1 so inspections are not done here. If I remove the smog pump I am not sure what all needs to be done. Do I just leave it on the truck without the belt or do I need to remove it and plug the hoses? Any advice yall can give is appreciated and I will more than likely follow. I love this truck it was my late grandfathers and I want to keep it running great.<O</O

Thanks in advance for all your help<O</O

I personally would get another altenator with a new pulley, or a new pulley for the altenator and put it on the truck.

A damaged pulley could theoreticly damage bearings, (due to imbalance), inside the device it drives, (if the reason why the pulley is dented didn't do such damage in the first place) and cause the entire pulley to come off through the hood or worse. It's cheaper to replace the damaged parts than to risk it happening down the road in the future, in my opinion.

And about the smog pump, If you take anything off of the truck smog related like that, I would keep the parts in a box somewhere. More and more states, and or counties are starting to do smog inspections. Would hate for anyone to take the stuff off, and down the road have to go junk yard hopping like a lot of people did in California back in the 80's, to keep their trucks licenced.

Hope this helps.

be careful if you do remove the smog pump because with efi models the computer brain uses thi info from the smog pump sensor if equipped. if it was me i would just replace the alternator. good luck......clay

Good points, your posts made me start thinking. I think I will get the a new pully and try that route. If that does not work I will get a new altenator. Thanks for all of yalls help. It made me start thinking, I am in the military and I could get stationed anywhere. Thanks again I dont know what I would do with out this forum.

try looking in a junk yard first. mine had no double pulley at all when I bought it. I had to special order one from Napa for about $18. But I had to go online and find the one that I thought was the one and print it out so the counter guy could find it. and as soon as it came in my alternator went bad so I have a spare if you want it.
