I have a 70 f-100 302 three speed with a problem with the clutch that i can't figure out. Every clutch that i ever had as it wore the clutch pedal would release up high and would eventually start slipping. My clutch you would have to press the clutch pedal all the way to the floor to get it to release. So the first thing you think is to adjust the linkage. But mine was adjusted all the way out. The pivot bushing was tight and every thing else looked good so i took the linkage off and extended it and then it worked fine. With the linkage longer i had more room to adjust therefore it worked fine. But over a period of time the clutch pedal is right back at the bottom again. I don't know what to do next?
Hi Charles, I have had the same problem. Take a look at the pivot that the clutch fork rides on. This is the one that is riveted to the bellhousing. I have had the rivets stretch which uses up your pedal travel. It doesn't take much slop in the linkage to use up the travel. You can fix this on the truck by drilling out the rivets and replacing then with 5/16 allen head capscrews. The 5/16 may fail over several years. The next time you have the bellhousing off, replace with 3/8. You have to open up the pivot holes with a small grinder; its hardned.
Worn or rusted cab mounts create all sorts of linkage problems (and slack) too. My '68 had the same problem -- and as I had no interest in replacing the mounts (farm vehicle) right away I solved the problem rather unscientifically...after replacing the clutch and throw-out (thinking rather unwisely) that this was the problem. It wasn't: the adjustment was even worse with the new clutch. The fix: A standard wheel lug nut fits into the fork cup receiver rather nicely and, has worked for years now. And I got a new clutch and a lesson in frozen pilot bearing removal to boot! (Addage: if it can't be seen, it isn't jury-rigged!)
