Any one out there have some experience with nitrous on there 5.4? I have a 102k 2002 F150 FX4. Alll highway, but obviously not brand new, but I wouldn't say worn out. I put on new double plat. plugs, fuel filter, K&N intake, flowmaster 3" exhaust and feel ready for a 100 hp nozzle nitro. It seems that a few I have spoken with think that up to 150 hp would be ok but from some articles I have read over 35% more than stock and you need to change some other parts. I was looking at the NOS system that only engages at full throttle and shuts off if you let off the gas at all. Any body have experience with this system or a similar one? Or is this all to risky for my daily driver?
I'd say go for it. Get rid of those platinum plugs, though. They run too hot and will cause detonation when you introduce nitrous to the motor.
man I just put them in about 2 months ago. I only plan to use this when I go out to the dunes which is about three weekends a year. out of those three weekends, I plan to go through about 15-20 or so 15 sec shots, so only about 60 hits of the button a year. With that little use do you still think it would be neccessary? This is my daily driver that I drive about 30 k a year on, would that change of the sparks have much effect on that?
I was also thinking of running fresh 87 oct with cans of oct boost on the weekends that I go to the dunes, what to you think?

Before you go dunin', run a test on the street and listen closely for any detonation, and make sure you have 93 octane for a 100 shot. 90 will work, if half the tank is 87 and half 93, but you'll be askin for detonation on a 100 shot with 87 octane and plat plugs. But definitely do a test before you get triggerhappy on that nitrous . I wouldn't worry about it too much, just take precautions like shellin out a little extra cash for 93, because it would be a lot cheaper than repairs should something go wrong. Hook up that bottle and have fun!

which do you beleive is better running 93, which fresh 93 can be hard to find since no one in bankrupt mchigan can afford it, OR fresh 87 and buy a can of octane boost to put me up to 104? Thanks.
It'll cost as much or more to buy octane boost than it will to just fill it with 93*.
I don't mind the few extra bucks I was just wondering from people who know bout this stuff which will protect the engine more? 87 with boost to 104 or 93. thanks.
I feel stupid but I thought that the premium at the pump was 93 but I found out that it is 91. so all this time I meant 91. Sounds like 91 is the ticket, i wonder if 91 plus a can of boost is better or a waste or worse?

A can of octane booster, if you read it completely, will give you about 3 points. This is equil to about .3 octane, so it would take many, many cans to get you up to 93. I would fill the tank with the premium (91 or 93 depending on area) a week before you go playing with the spray, this way you will have true 9? octane in the tanke to keep the detonation away.

True. In other words, you'd need about 20 cans of octane boost to get from 87 to 93. Filling up with 93 is going to be much cheaper than trying to boost a full tank of 87 to 93. Try 91, but don't run that nitrous on 87. I'd bet this week's paycheck you'd get detonation.
fbodyfan and lxman1 I appreciate all the info, thank you! The NOS system is going on today. NOSzle 8cyl. efi. 100 wet shot with WOT safety switch with a low fuel safety cutoff. Running the 93 oct. I let you know what happens. Thanks again.

Forget using that octane boost stuff to increase your octane level. Go find the local speed shop or gas station that sells to the hi-performance crowd and pick up a few gallons of high octane. The local shop here has 104 unleaded (114 leaded).
4gl @ 104 = 416
21gl @ 91 =1911
416 + 1911 = 2327(total octane in 25 gal. tank)
2327/25 = 93.08 octane rating
This way you'll know what's in the tank. The other way your just guessing. Read the side of the octane boost cans and they say stuff like "treats up to 21 gallons"
The drawback is the $6.75 a gallon for the 104(5.95/gl for unleaded) however if it's just a once in a while thing the fun factor of the higher octane will far outway the cost of a few gallons.
