8.8 vs 9 inch

The 71 F-100 donor truck I'm getting parts off of definatlly has front disc brakes on it the gentlemen installed them about 4 years ago.He says he thinks the rear end is an 8.8 but isn't sure. These trucks came factory with a 9" correct, how can I tell by looking at it, sorry I know this is very basic stuff. My 66 has a 9" in it but he said to take what ever I want off the truck cause its going to the scrap yard so I might as well get another rearend if it is a 9" and if it is any idea what the ratio might be from the factory, it was a V8 manual truck thanks again guys.I traded a 302 flywheel for this truck what a deal!

8.8 has a cover on the back like a GM rear, 9 inch comes out the front as an assembly or chuck assy.

If the truck was bigger than a 302 it has a 9" rear end. 8.8's were only used on sixes and 302s I believe.

The only two choices throughout the 70's in the F100/F150 are the Ford 9 inch and the rare Dana 44 rear axle. As mentioned the 9 inch has no rear cover, it all comes out the front.

Edit: The Dana 44 was last installed in the F100/150 in 1968, so the only factory rear axle for the 1/2 ton after 1968 was the 9 inch, until the 8.8 in 1985, as 390gashog has stated.

only options were the 9'' and dana 44 but the 9'' was standard the 8.8'' started in 1985 as standard equipment.
