Okay heres the problem; last year I got a new master cylinder on my 73 F-100 2WD with a 390. The truck was parked all winter. This spring I drove it about 30 km and went from decent but not great brakes to very poor brakes. Now my pedal goes to the floor before I get brakes. This has led me to suspect a fluid leak. I popped the top on the master cylinder and I've got full fluid in the large resevior but the small resevior is empty. The lines under the hood look good. Before I pull all the wheels thought I'd ask for any hints, tips, ideas as to where my problem is.
The rubber seals inside the master cylinder have broke down so much they are allowing brake fluid to by-pass the piston and return to the reservoir without putting pressure on the hydraulic brake parts at the wheels.
Replace the Master Cylinder with one that has stainless steel sleeves.
If it was full when you parked it, my bet is that you have a leak in the rear system……..and ……..now you have air in it too. If its a "normal" leak you should see break fluid on the inside of one or both of the rear tires. If it is a rear cylinder they are cheep, no big deal to fix and I would do them both, just for laughs.
Repair the leak, bleed the system and go from there.
Whooops , Mis-read ...I thought he said there wasn't any leaks.
Too many late nights for me
If there isn;t any leaking in the rear brake circuit ...Another possibility is brake fluid being sucked out the back of the MC plunger into the brake booster.
I am currently havin the same trouble, but this is what is wrong with mine,...... BRAKE PRESSURE DIFFERENCIAL VALVE, I swear, mine acts the same way but I just dont have the money for a new one, so I'm waitin to find a used one, anyone have any, PM me asap please, thanx
