[updated:LAST EDITED ON 09-May-02 AT 07:21 PM (EST)]Ok, i took my 2bbl out for the first time and replaced all the gaskets and most of the little parts... u know. Well what i mainly did is take every thing off and sprayed it with carb cleaner. I mean everthing.. except gaskets. Then i put it back on. and it will idle high then go down idle high then go down idle high tthen go down. over and over. like this sorda
......--------.......-------........-------......
u get the point. Well why would this be happening. I didnt mess with the air/fuel mixture screws. Should i let it run and let it clear it up. it sorda sounds like back firing but not really. Thanks.
Oky i just drove to get a sub and it cleared up a lot. But when ever i come to a stop i hear this clikcing noise. i dotn know what it is. Oh part of the accelerating linkage there is a big pole thing about 3 1/2 feet long. What is this???? it goes to nothing. the acclerater cable goes into the firewall. This pole just hangs downthere by the exhuast pipe, and headers...
The big pole would be your kickdown linkage. Your idle problem I'm guessing is caused by the carb - intake gasket leaking. The clicking is beyond me. Did you possibly drop something down into the intake while you were rebuilding it?
well its always done the clicking thing. it jsut does it a little more now. It does it when im breaking to a stop. It sorda chugs and makes this clicking sound when im at like 5mph then 4mph then 3mph then the idle picks up a smooths out. So that big pole is supposed to be there?? Why is there a hole with a bolt on the end of it. is it supposed to be connected any where? im think this might be the sound... hiting the headers and exhuast pipe maybe??
On a stock setup there is you rod that goes from your carb to the leverset bolted to the manifold. Then there is your kickdown rod coming from the leverst to the tranny. The your rod from the leverset to the accelerator pedal rod. If your engine runs poorly when you hit the brakes there is definitely a vaccum leak.
Your flucuating idle sounds like a fairly bad vacuem leak. If your lucky it'll be between the carb and manifold (easiest to fix) with the engine running spray some WD40 around the base of the carb where it meets the manifold/spacer. If it's leaking you'll see the oil being sucked into the intake and your idle might smooth out for a sec or two.
I hope you find your problem.
